Cowra, is ideally located on the banks of the Lachlan River and nestled in the
Lachlan Valley, The landscape varies from river flats to slopes, rolling hills and
some rugged wilderness areas. A scenic 4 hours drive from Sydney and 2 hours
drive from Canberra.
A hidden treasure surrounded by farmlands and vineyards, the area is most famous
for the largest Prisoner Of War breakout in the modern military history, one of the
most dramatic episodes in Australia's wartime history. Today you can visit the
POW camp and war cemeteries and drop in at the towns very popular Japanese
Garden.
Cowra is also the perfect base to explore the Central West. Centrally located,
Cowra is within easy driving distance of several major tourist destinations in the
central west of New South Wales. Take a hot air balloon joy flight at Canowindra -
"The Balloon Capital of Australia" or visit the Ages of the Fishes Museum featuring
ancient fish fossils as well as a live aquarium displays and wonderful recreations of
life in the Devonian.
The Cowra region, is also best known for its Chardonnay, Verdelho and Shiraz. The
region is 350 km west of Sydney and at 310m above sea level the area has an
excellent climate for rich, golden Chardonnays.
